What is Ballot ?

Otherwise, a ballot paper Election paper is a form that voters use to exercise their right to vote. A ballot normally has a list of candidates from which the voter can choose their preferred candidate, along with the party name and logos that are printed in the paper. The voter irrevocably confirms their intent to vote as they have chosen on a ballot in which they have taken the final decision regarding contest possibilities.

History of Ballot ?

The Italian term ballotta, which refers to a little stone used to cast a ballot, is where the word "ballot" first appeared. Voting has been done by humans for thousands of years, frequently using objects like sticks, stones, shells, or even pieces of pottery. In open elections, eligible voters literally cast their ballots by throwing a symbol for a candidate or legislation they supported into a pile. Voters made their selections on private ballots and placed them in a collecting box to be counted as part of the evolution of the public voting process into the secret ballot.

When a Paper Ballot was first Used in India ?

In 1951 and 1952, ECI used paper ballots for the first time in India to hold the nation's first-ever election. Given that as a nation we had just achieved independence and were just getting off the ground, it was a challenging task for the ECI. Since that time, India has grown to be the largest democracy in the world.

How EVM is Better than Ballot ?

After 30 years after gaining independence, India began holding elections with the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs). Only paper ballots were utilised up until that point. The Election Commission of India came up with an alternative and better method of exercising citizens' right to vote after discovering that there were numerous irregularities, such as vote rigging, forgery of ballots, booth capture using force, and excessive time spent getting the paper ballots packed.

Despite the fact that there were unfounded allegations and debates around EVM. But aside from this, there are many more factors that make EVMs safer, more effective, and more dependable than ballots. A few of these are as follows:

EVM are Safer.

EVMs are known to be secure devices. In fact, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced an open hacking challenge in June 2017 to dispel the false narrative. Syed Shuja, a well-known critic and a London-based cyber expert, was one of the critics who failed to successfully hack the machine, proving the veracity of all their allegations.

Adaptability

EVMs are simpler for the illiterate masses to understand than paper ballot systems.

Ecological

Ballot paper results in a large amount of paper waste. EVMs, in contrast, are entirely digital, which makes them environmentally friendly and reduces their carbon footprint.

Easy to Carry

EVM are more portable, lighter, and come with carrying cases than ballot boxes, making them simpler to transfer.

Cost Saving.

Authorities were required by the ballot to print the ballot paper, transport it to and from the assembly, provide storage space, and ensure its safe distribution. Whereas, all this hassle in minimised in EVM which saves significant amount of cost to ECI.

Quick Result

In contrast to the 30–40 hours required by the ballot system, the voting process is quite short, and the results can be announced in 2–3 hours.

Fraudlent Detection Mechanism

The technology will alert the election officer of any errors in case any further votes are recorded into the EVM at a later stage. To find out how this was verified, Click Here

Long Term Data Storage

The EVM can preserve the recorded votes for up to ten years.
