Google recently has affirmed that it is prepared to work with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) as it is was coming under a lot of criticism because of its monopoly in the smartphone OS market in India and its practise of forcing its own apps as standard services on Android smartphones. Currently, IIT-Madras, India's premier institute, has created a new operating system dubbed BharOS that will reportedly benefit India's 100 crore smartphone users by providing a more secure and private mobile operating system.
What is BharOS ?
BharOS is a project that aims to create a new operating system for India that is similar to the Android operating system. In fact, BharOS is an AOSP (Android Open Source Project)-based operating system that will include innovative Apps rather than Google-owned apps and services. BharOS's goal is to provide a secure and lightweight operating system for Indian citizens while reducing the country's reliance on foreign technology.
Why BharOS is Developed ?
The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a research and development institution, is creating BharOS. To make it available to a greater population in India, the operating system is being developed to run on inexpensive devices with constrained resources, such as RAM and storage. The pre-installed apps and services offered by the Indian government, including as e-governance and digital payments, are designed to make using BharOS more secure and regional for consumers.By enabling more people to access low-cost, internet-connected devices and digital services, BharOS aims to reduce the digital divide in India. The Indian government has developed a unique operating system that can run on inexpensive devices with constrained capabilities by utilising open-source software and building on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). More people in India will be able to access government services and the internet thanks to this, even in impoverished and remote locations.
